The newest segment of Toll 49, connecting Highway 110 South to Interstate 20, is expected to open later this month, but the Northeast Texas Regional Mobility Authority is ready to get the party started now.
Saturday at 10 a.m., NET RMA is throwing a celebration on the toll road and is inviting East Texans to join them.
Mile-by-mile, Toll 49 is slowly coming to fruition. When the next segment opens, the completed part of the project will be 26 miles long. But it's not stopping there.
"The road is planned to go further north toward Lindale and tie into Interstate 69 north of Lindale," says NET RMA interim executive director Everett Owen.
Future plans also extend Toll 49 to extend to the east and the north through Gregg, Upshur and Harrison counties. That final project is a long way off, but NET RMA is ready to celebrate the latest addition this weekend.
"The road is not open yet, and won't be open until sometime at the end of the month, so we're going to have the celebration on the road itself," Owen says.
Saturday's celebration signifies TxDOT passing operation and maintenance duties over to NET RMA, and it's not a ribbon cutting like all the rest. Elected officials and board members will be there along with live music, food vendors, vintage and sports cars on display. TxTag will also be present to sell toll tags to anyone who has yet to get one.
"Get ready for when the road opens because it's going to be a major convenience for people," says Owen.
It's a convenience NET RMA hopes won't just bring drivers joy, but will lessen congestion and spur economic development, too.
The celebration begins Saturday at 10 a.m. You will find all the festivities on Toll 49 about a half a mile south of Interstate 20. If you're planning to attend, you should enter the toll road from 1-20 West near the Hideaway exit. There will be signs directing you to the right location.
