Better East Texas: Postal woes

EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - We have all heard that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Well, sometimes you have to question the sanity of the logic for some organizations.  I am speaking of the United States Postal Service and the decision to close the processing and distribution center near Tyler.  The impact will cost the area more than two hundred jobs but what is the most perplexing is that the postal service has been losing an estimated 23 million dollars a day and the result of closing the Tyler center will be that mail in the affected area will most likely be delayed by an additional day.

So this decision has the intent of helping turn the postal service around financially while reducing the efficiency of the service.  There is no doubt, this will negatively impact the ability of the postal service to deliver mail in a timely manner.  The decision forces mail that is going across the city of Tyler to travel as far away as Austin, Dallas or even Shreveport before returning to Tyler for delivery.  How can this decision help the U-S-P-S get more efficient or lose less money?

This is one of those times when they should contract the daily service in rural areas and keep the service and service centers that affect the largest population and ultimately the most profit.  It is sad that this great institution is failing and they seem to be helping themselves down that road.
