First West Nile Case Confirmed In Smith County

A blue jay found dead in northeast Tyler is the first confirmed case of West Nile Virus in Smith County this year.

The bird was found dead this week in the 2300 block of North Lex Avenue, and the test was confirmed as positive Wednesday. This is the first year the Northeast Texas Public Health District can do immediate tests for the mosquito-borne illness.

Now they've found the virus, mosquito treatment will continue. Across the city, spraying for the blood-suckers is at a more frequent level than ever before. Twice a week, the city is blanketed with standard mosquito insecticide or a brand new organic product being used for the first time this year.

Gregg County has already had a positive animal case of West Nile.
