They thought they were the best spellers -- all of them. But in Tyler Wednesday, most found they were a letter or two short of victory.
Team by team they were weeded out -- the businesses and groups in the Literacy Council of Tyler's annual spelling bee. Among the teams, the KLTV spellers finished in fourth place with the winners, Tyler Morning Telegraph beating out the Pilot Club for top honors.
The spelling bee is a big fundraiser for the Literacy Council, which helps many East Texans to learn to read. It's a task that keeps getting tougher.
Literacy Council's Freda Peppard: "It's a problem that's changing because of the demographic changes in Texas. A lot of people are here who have had no formal training in English ever, and [if that continues] we might become one of the poorest states in the nation."
This is the 14th year for the Literacy Council's Spelling Bee, and every dollar raised goes to their programs.
