LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The competitiveness of the game apparently became too much for a Kentuckiana middle school parent at a recent girls basketball game.

It happened inside Kammerer Middle School on February 7 just as the game wrapped up.

"The students did behave themselves and there were no incidents but after the game apparently we had a parent who made her way into the locker room," said JCPS spokesperson Ben Jackey.

Police say right after the game that Kammerer won, Wanohah Knuckles, 36, forced her way into the Westport locker room, shoved the coach, and choked a middle school player. Knuckles has a daughter on the Kammerer Middle School team.

"There were two staff members that were very close by the locker room, noticed something was wrong, and immediately intervened," Jackey said.

School leaders had actually prepared for the possibility of a problem.

"A few days before the February 7 game between the two schools, administrators from both schools became aware of some conversation that was happening on Facebook between members of both teams," Jackey said.

Fellow parents shook their head at the news.

"It's not too surprising with what you see at little league games and soccer games. It's just getting out of control with parents not being able to control themselves. It just seems like the parents have gotten to be worse than the kids and violence is just overtaking everything," a parent said while leaving the school.

The entire Westport team witnessed the fight; a disappointing lesson about sportsmanship in a game they love.

"It's an opportunity for students to grow, learn sportsmanship, team work and a variety of other good characteristics when they're on the field of play. So it's disappointing when something like this happens, but it's extremely rare," Jackey said.

Knuckles is facing third and fourth degree assault charges. The two people police say she assaulted were not seriously hurt.
