Tyler Lee celebrating long awaited post-season berth

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Shelley Calhoun loves her new job.

She's been handing out the newest in Red Raider wardrobe.

"This is a blast, we can't wait to see students and the players and the staff wearing them tomorrow," said Calhoun, who's son is a junior on the Lee team. "The stands at Van High School will be filled with these T-shirts."

The shirts are Robert E. Lee playoff shirts.

The new line comes courtesy of the boys basketball team, who finds themselves in the playoffs for the first time in six years.

"Oh, it is awesome, really awesome." said senior Tucker Boyd. "Feels good to have people talking about us and playoffs, it is what the program needed."

"We feel like we are playing for the whole community in Tyler that supports Robert E. Lee," said senior Taylor Tankersley. "Coach J [Alan Johnston] always says we are playing vicariously through all of them. We are playing for our community."

The playoff birth, has also given a much needed boost to the boys athletics at Lee.

"Before the season I had talked to some of my friends, and I was like 'Dang, all the girls sports have been making the post season, volleyball, soccer etc..." said Tankersley. "But everyone is pumped about it, even the teachers are talking to me about it, so the school really needed it."

"Ever since I was in high school we have not had the dominant team like we use to," said Boyd. "No state championship football team and no playoff basketball team, it feels good to finally have some success."

"It has made the students excited the parents excited," said Calhoun. "We're all into it, we can't wait until tomorrow night and pull out another win."

Only one thing remains.

What to wear?

"It is pretty neat [the playoff shirts]. I can't wait to wear it."

Problem solved, thanks to a season to remember.

Lee plays Lakeview Centennial in the bi-district round at 7:00 on Tuesday at Van High School.

Stephen f. Austin head football coach Clint Conque paid a visit to the Rose City this afternoon. It's perfect timing to pump up the program, considering the Jacks are coming off a dramatic last second win over Incarnate Word. Put on by the alumni association, Conque was the featured speaker at a Lumberjack networking event. Coach Conque got to brag a little about SFA's first victory of the year.
