Kacey Musgraves graduated from Mineola High School in 2006. She would go on to appear on 'Nashville Star' and start touring the world.
On Wednesday night, Musgraves tweeted a photo before performing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. A performance friends, family and former instructors do not want to miss.
"It's a small town, so it pretty much spreads like wildfire once we found out. We've already got it DVR'd and we're all ready to watch it," said Alex Epps who went to high school with Musgraves and now teaches at the school.
Musgraves is nominated for female vocalist of the year in the 48th annual Academy of Country Music Awards. She is also nominated for new female vocalist, and twice for video of the year for "Merry Go 'Round" both as an artist and a producer.
"I have 'Merry Go 'Round' on my phone; I actually downloaded it the day it came out," Epps said.
"In art class a lot of times we will listen to the radio while the kids are working, and I remember the first time her song came on," said Kari Callison, Musgraves' former art teacher.
Excited to hear her former student's song on the radio, Callison said she gathered her art class together and pointed out Musgraves' painting, which still hangs on her wall.
"She loved drawing and painting anything that had to do with country music," Callison said as she pointed to a painting Musgraves did of Willie Nelson.
Others at the school agree that Musgraves has left her mark there.
"Probably a month before she graduated, she stuck a piece of paper up there without me knowing it," said Mineola Principal Ricky Stephens. " I remember seeing it up there and saying to myself, 'I'm going to leave it up there just in case she's famous one day,'" Stephens said.
It seems Musgraves' classmates knew she would be a star long before Nashville. In her senior yearbook, her graduating class voted her 'Most Likely to Become Famous.'
"It's always nice to see someone make it because mainly, not because of me, because that's what their dream was. And if I feel like if I gave a small part in helping them obtain their dream then, that's fantastic," said Musgraves' former music instructor, John DeFoore.
Musgraves is up against another East Texas artist, Miranda Lambert, a Lindale native, for the female vocal artist of the year award. The winners will be named at the ACM Awards on April 7 in Las Vegas.
