Tyler named one of top retirement cities in United States

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

A retirement website has crunched the numbers, and one East Texas city has made the list of the top five places to retire in the United States.

The website, GreatPlacesToRetire.com, has surveyed retirees all across the nation and includes Tyler as the best Texas city in the country's top retirement 99 communities.

For Cecil and Jane Neal, living closer to their son led them to leave Phoenix and retire to Tyler in 2006.

"This was strictly a place for retirement people, and Tyler was a little town - it was actually smaller then than it is now, see," said Cecil. "But it was real nice, and we were really surprised at the weather. We were surprised they planted winter flowers like they did in Phoenix and all that."

The survey ranked 20 quality-of-life categories, including taxes, home prices, and demographic diversity. Tyler ranked second nationwide in the average score, just 0.5 points behind Clarksville, TN.

Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce officials have been recruiting retirees to the area through their own website, RetireTyler.com, for the last 12 years.

"We did not want Tyler to become a retirement-only community, but we wanted it to be retirement-friendly," said the Chamber of Commerce's president and CEO Tom Mullins.

Mullins said retirees are looking for several things Tyler offers.

"They're looking for warmer climate, lower cost of living, Texas is a non-income tax state. You've got a lot of amenities here with the medical center and the higher-education concentration," Mullins said. "Retirees have found Texas, they have found the South, the Sunbelt, and they have come to Tyler in large numbers."

In the Best Places to Retire survey, Tyler ranked very high in population growth, medical care, and demographic diversity.

Additional Texas cities to make the Best Places to Retire list include Georgetown, San Marcos, The Woodlands, and Galveston.
