EAST WALNUT HILLS, OH (FOX19) -
The Dean of Student Life and assistant principal at Purcell Marian High School has been fired over comments he made in support of gay marriage.
"I was just fire by the archdiocese of Cincinnati," (sic) Mike Moroski tweeted last Monday morning.
Moroski told FOX19 on Feb. 9th that he was placed on leave with a pending termination for expressing support of gay marriage on his personal web page.
Moroski says that the Archdiocese of Cincinnati gave him an ultimatum- resign, or keep his job at Purcell Marian until June by signing a document recanting statements made on his personal blog.
The blog post, entitled Choosing Your Battles, was written on Jan. 27.
"I unabashedly believe that gay people SHOULD be allow to marry," wrote Moroski in his blog. "Ethically, morally and legally I believe this."
Employees of the Catholic schools sign a document stating that they will act in conformity with Catholic Church doctrine.
In addition, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) issued this statement regarding Moroski's dismissal:
"It's truly unfortunate that standing up for marriage equality has apparently cost Mike Moroski his job. HRC admires his commitment to equality and hope that it continues. While the school that employed Mr. Moroski is run by the Catholic Church and thus has a First Amendment right terminate employees like Mr. Moroski who hold beliefs that differ from church policy, that does not make their decision to do so right, since 59 percent of Catholics support marriage equality."
The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has not commented on the issue.
