Longview hosts home and garden show

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

The annual home and garden show is going on in Longview this weekend and drawing big crowds. In years past the home and garden show at Maude Cobb activity center was something of a ghost town with, vendors getting any sales, any way they could.

"Sometimes we were here, and the vendors were trying to sell to the other vendors," says event emcee Doug McKinney.

But the crowds are back, and organizers say its for a simple reason.

"Great place to come to see all the new items of today's world. We can kind of tell the economy of our year , by how many people come in the door and this has been a good year a sign a good economy to come," McKinney says.

Even the Longview mayor was checking out the latest in home remodeling.

"We've seen a slowdown in new home building and spec building , a lot of what you see here is people looking at upgrading and enhancing the home that they have. We as a community have weathered this economy better than others," says mayor Jay Dean.

The one stop shopping is also attractive to those looking to build.

"We're building a house here in Longview and its a great place to see what the local vendors are doing , different home products," says Longview couple Gary and Lynn Taylor.

And the show itself has become a boon to the city.

"All those good tax dollars that are spent goes right back to the community," Dean says.

"Judging by the attendance today, it looks like its going to be another good year in Longview Texas," McKinney says.

The home and garden show continues Sunday at Maude Cobb activity center from 10-am to 5-pm.
