The USDA recently launched the Smart Snacks in Schools regulations, part of the 2010 Healthy Hungry Free Kids Act. The new rules will regulate what is sold in vending machines and school cafeterias. Vending machines cannot offer candy, greasy chips, cakes, sports drinks or any beverage with caffeine.

The new USDA Smart Snacks in Schools regulation mandates all snacks to be less than 200 calories per serving. They must have no more then 200 milligrams of sodium, only 35 percent of calories from sugar, and be caffeine free. Snack foods must have fruits, vegetables, protein, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and nuts as part of the selection.
