Will post office cuts affect East Texas businesses?

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

On Wednesday, the U.S. Postal Service announced they plan to end Saturday mail delivery in an effort to save $2 billion annually.

Despite this change, the agency said packages will still be delivered on Saturdays, as will mail to post office boxes. Also, post offices that are already open on Saturdays remain open.

The U.S. Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. But one East Texas business owner said those costs are too high.

"Most of the people I do business with do everything electronically, you know, to try to save that postage. Right now, with today's economy it's about saving that dollar if we can," said Billy Hunter, owner of SCUBA Steve's Aquatic Adventures in Tyler.

"When you're having to add 30, 40 or 50 cents for every check you put in the mail, that adds up over the month," Hunter explained.

For this SCUBA shop, there is a lot of big gear being shipped in and out.

"UPS is my biggest source of shipping my bigger items. On occasions, I do use the U.S.P.S. for their flat rate stuff on smaller stuff," Hunter said.

Ty Yarbrough is the co-owner of High Cotton clothing store in Tyler. Yarbrough said as long as the post office continues to deliver packages on Saturdays, the changes should not be a big inconvenience.

"Letters, we're not going to be sending out or it's not going to affect us on the weekends, but we are going to be sending out a lot of packages just to make sure our stuff gets to you know, our customers on time," Yarbrough said.

For the owner of The Potpourri House, technology has taken the place of Post Office visits on Saturday.

"My bookkeepers are gone Saturday and so we're just not putting checks out. So, if we're mailing it, it's typically my party coordinator or myself and we're emailing on those days as opposed to using the post office," said Les Ellsworth, owner of The Potpourri House.

When it comes to packages, these business owners said the U.S.P.S has some heavy competition.

"We also have UPS and FedEx coming here daily so that's typically who is doing about 60 percent of my boxes that we are mailing out and probably 95 percent of my boxes that we are receiving are coming through them," Ellsworth said.
