Special Olympics Athletes Get Wet, Medals

The Tyler Special Olympics delegation, the East Texas Challengers, held their 2004 swim meet Saturday at Fun Forest Park. The athletes competed in a variety of events including the freestyle, backstroke, and the assisted and floatation swims.

There were medals awarded in every heat, and every athlete took one home. For them, today's meet was the culmination of weeks of hard work and preparation.

"We practice very hard," East Texas Challengers secretary Toni Turner says. "We work for eight to ten weeks to get ready. It's good for the kids, it keeps them active."

Next up for the East Texas Challengers will be their softball tournament in September.
