ETX elementary students participate in math competition

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

Ware Elementary School has a new plan for engaging students when it comes to math.

Students from all different grade levels competed in a problem solving competition on Tuesday. Students divided into groups and then worked diligently to work problems that were all worth different points.

The principal said the school's math scores are not where they need to be, so she planned this math competition to get kids comfortable with the subject all while having fun.

She hopes the competition will not only stress the subject, but teach parents and their children not be to afraid of it.

"We want them to know that they are very capable of being able to solve those problems that they are going to see not only in life, but also in that wonderful, wonderful test by the name of STAAR for our upper grade levels," Principal Sara Sheppard said.

The school hopes to have more of these events. In fact, they are having a family math night where they will provide tips on how parents can help their students when it comes to working math problems.
