Tyler has long been known for the quality of it's football players, but not a lot of people know it's also well known for the quality of it's swimmers. The Tyler Swim Team has eight swimmers set to leave tomorrow for Austin to participate in the long course state championships. They have two going in the 13 and 14 year old class, two going in the 11 and 12 year old class, and 4 going in the 10 and under class, including 10-year-old Sam Lewis, who has qualified in 10 events and is nationally ranked. The team also has five swimmers 15 and over who qualified for sectionals next week in Austin, including 15-year-old David Michaels, who is ranked number two in the nation in the short course 200 free. Head coach Janet Taylor says they are very excited about the amount of swimmers who have qualified for state.
"They worked hard, the parents have had to get them to an awful lot of workouts and it's very, very rewarding for them, very rewarding for the coaches and it is hard work," said Taylor. "They are looking at the top 5% of the kids in the nation, who qualify for these meets, and only 1% of the nation will actually qualify for the top eight to go to the finals."
The Tyler team has several swimmers capable of qualifying to move on to a zone meet that features swimmers from across the country.
