To the trained eye of David Rodgers, it looked like a different sort of a struggle in Washington DC on Monday.
"You can tell when the president stepped out today and it was a pretty thick door," he says of the presidential state car.
Rodgers is the Sales and Business Development Manager of Streit USA Armoring in North Charleston. The armored vehicle manufacturer produces upwards of 70 reinforced vehicles each month for mostly military, law enforcement and commercial use.
"We see a lot of business for government agencies that are involved in high threat areas that operate overseas," he said. "Vehicles that are involved here are in convoys for very important persons."
Streit installs armored plating, bulletproof glass, as well as other safety features onto their vehicles. Rodgers says the additional steel reinforcements can weigh upwards of 2,500 pounds.
"A lot of it depends on what kind of threat they're trying to protect against," he says.
Though Streit did not create the presidential state car, Rodgers says it undoubtedly features the highest level of security.
"There's a very high degree of threat they're protecting against," he says. "Although we didn't make that vehicle, rest assured -- that vehicle will protect the president."
