LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Marchers from the Martin Luther King Jr. day parade gathered at Dunbar Primary school. It was a full house as people poured into the cafeteria. The surge of excitement ignited the air as onlookers waited patiently for the 2013 Dunbar Primary induction ceremony to begin.

Inductees Robert Lee Kuykendall and Harold Lyons both say today was a special day.

"I think it's very ironic that not only is it Martin Luther King's birthday. It's also the inauguration day for the second term for the first black president of the United States and at the same time having this induction," Lyons said. "It's a great thing and sometimes coincidences aren't what they seem. Sometimes the Lord plans them that way."

"That's a big thing to me," Kuykendall said. "For someone to choose you and to induct you into something that stands for something good. It makes me feel wonderful."

Lyons was a football star during his reign at Dunbar. At 62, he is the vice president and head of facilities at AARP in Washington D.C.

Lyons says he can't believe he is being honored today.

"Well there are a lot of great and wonderful people that have come through this institution and I'm humble that they have chosen me to be among them," Lyons said.

Many people took to the podium from Lufkin's Mayor Bob Brown to Reverend W.R. Ricks from First Missionary Baptist Church.

Kuykendall, a former music and seventh grade history teacher who dedicated twenty years to Lufkin ISD, said that he doesn't know why they picked him, but he does know the honor felt good.

"I'm happy about it and I've been here many years attending, walking, marching and it seems like it just found my time," Kuykendahll said.
