New trend: Teachers learning martial arts in wake of Newtown shootings

Good afternoon, everyone! We hope you've enjoyed some time outside on this lovely day in East Texas.

We know the inauguration of President Obama and Vice President Biden has been front-and-center in the news today, but we've also been working on other stories for you today in our newsroom. Here's a sample of what you'll see today at 4, 5, and 6:

First, we'll tell you about a trend that is beginning among teachers. Some educators, concerned with the safety of their students and themselves following the Newtown school massacre, are beginning to take self-defense and martial arts training. We'll have that story at 4.

Our Lexie Cook will also update us regarding a residential fire in Tyler earlier this afternoon. The fire was on David Drive.

At 5, we'll update you on the Algerian hostage crisis; we now know that three Americans have been killed.

At 6, we'll tell you what's been going on in ETX at various MLK Day festivities, and we'll tell you about a meth ring bust in Polk County in which a third person has now been arrested on child endangerment and manufacture of a controlled substance. We'll tell you more coming up this evening.

(By the way, you can always check out the latest local news on the local page on our website.)

Also, Meteorologist Brett Collar is in today and will fill you in on what to expect in our unique East Texas weather. We have quite a variety coming at us this week! Brett will explain at 4, 5, and 6.

And if you're on your computer today, you can catch all of our evening shows on You don't have to miss a thing!

We'll see you soon,
