Missing Pearl Harbor survivor found dead in Rocky Hill

ROCKY HILL, CT (WFSB) -

Police in Rocky Hill located the body of 92-year-old Raymond Krawiec in town Monday afternoon.

Krawiec, a veteran who survived the bombing at Pearl Harbor, left the Lodge at Cold Spring Sunday morning.

The Lodge at Cold Spring is an independent senior living community where the staff provide meals and basic medical care, but residents can come and go as they choose.

Police said Krawiec was found about a mile from the senior living community by a Sysco employee in a parking lot near 100 Inwood Rd. around noon.

Even though Krawiec had Alzheimer's and trouble walking, he went for a walk every day at 10:30 a.m., according to police.

By 4 p.m., the staff at the Lodge at Cold Spring realized that he had not returned and called police.

Search crews armed with dogs and thermal cameras looked for Krawiec for almost 24 hours.

Rocky Hill police received assistance from neighboring towns during the search, which was focused on backyards, streets, garages and nearby woods because of Krawiec's difficulty with walking.

"You know the weather conditions were such that we knew it was imperative last night that we get out here. The dogs were excellent," said Rocky Hill Police Lt. Brian Klett. "I don't think there was anything else we could have done. The area was saturated with police and EMS and help from surrounding agencies."

Officials said Krawiec had disappeared before, but was always found nearby.

Police believe Krawiec's wife lives at the home, while the rest of his family lives in Old Saybrook, where he is originally from.

Krawiec and his wife do have connections to Rocky Hill and had just moved into this facility in the recent months.

Rocky Hill detectives told Eyewitness News that they are continuing to investigate, but right now police said Krawiec's death does not appear to be suspicious.
