One part of proposal from the president that many firing off is the ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
Hunters are speaking up about how these guns are part of the sport.
Polly Bowers-Maness owns a pink semi-automatic .223 rifle.
She took up hog hunting about 2 years ago after she realized what a problem they are in the community.
KTRE asked her: Why do you need that type of gun for you to hog hunt? Maness said, "Often hog herds can be anywhere between 10, 20, 30, I've even heard rumors of 50 or so in a herd. They're a nuisance to the state so to help with eliminating the hog herd, you need more than 6,7 or 8, shots at a time."
Maness says when you're out hunting 10 bullets might not be enough.
"I would have a least 1 full magazine. It holds 30 rounds," said Maness. She said that she almost thinks of people who are trying to remedy the hog problem as doing a public service.
Maness said, "In the length of time it takes to get off 1 shot. I can get off 3. So again, we are eliminate the herd 3x faster by using a semi-automatic."
Maness says she thinks the President's proposal is walking a fine line.
"I'm worried," said Maness. "I'm worried. Because again this is a right that we have that's being infringed upon, if I wanted a gun, that's my right."
She said, "As long as guns are owned by responsible people and law abiding citizens there should be no reason to limit. It's our second amendment right, to have, if I want to have a rifle, a pistol, an automatic, a cannon, whatever the case may be as a law abiding citizen, it's my right to have whichever guns I choose and I can afford."
In the meantime, Maness like lots of other hunting enthusiasts are stocking up on ammunition and Polly says she hasn't been able to find any in the past 2 weeks.
KTRE did some research and found out what exactly the President's proposal is actually asking Congress to do.
In his proposal, he said: "Reinstate and strengthen the ban on assault weapons: The shooters in Aurora and Newtown used the type of semiautomatic rifles that were the target of the assault weapons ban that was in place from 1994 to 2004. That ban was an important step, but manufacturers were able to circumvent the prohibition with cosmetic modifications to their weapons. Congress must reinstate and strengthen the prohibition on assault weapons."
And this is what the 1994 "Crime Bill" detailed:
- The law named 19 different firearms that were illegal
- The law listed 6 specific features (that if present on one firearm) would constitute as an assault weapon. Those 6 features are as follows:
1) a folding or telescoping stock
2) a pistol grip
3) a bayonet mount
4) a flash suppressor or threads to attach one
5) a muzzle capable of acting as a grenade launcher
