HARRISON, OH (FOX19) -
The faculty and students of Harrison Junior School are excited to announce that the Great Harrison Wildcat Space Race was a success.
Teams of students were given the challenge to take a picture of the Harrison Wildcat Logo with the curvature of the Earth in the background. The teams were given 15 weeks to complete the project with a budget of $150. In addition to the photo, teams were asked to get temperature data and altitude data.
The goal of this project was to develop lessons across all curricular areas that focused on a greater goal. The teaching staff from all areas developed lessons that were in line with the Common Core Standards that schools in the State of Ohio are adopting.
On January 10, 2013, Harrison Junior School held it first ever launch. Five weather balloons with payloads consisting of both video and still cameras were released. The balloons were estimated to fly to an altitude ranging from 100,000 to 125,000 feet.
With the help of iPhone GPS technology provided by Harrison AT&T store, four out of five balloons were recovered. The balloons traveled 125 miles and landed near Logan Lake in the Hocking Hills area of Ohio, while others landed in the Circleville area.
