More alcohol petitions circulating

Posted: Updated:
SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

More areas in Smith County are jumping on the alcohol bandwagon, as two new petitions to allow the sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption in Whitehouse and Smith County Precinct 1.

The Whitehouse Committee for economic growth is circulating the petitions in Whitehouse. In November in 2010, a proposition to allow the sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption in Whitehouse failed to pass.

According to Smith County Karen Nelson, 735 signatures will need to be gathered by January 25 in order for the proposition to get on the May ballot. 1,835 signatures are needed to place the proposition on May ballots in Smith County JP Precinct 1.

Smith County JP1 includes most of the Tyler city limits, as well as an area to the west and north of Tyler in Smith County.
