East Texas restaurants fighting the flu

Posted: Updated:

As an aggressive flu strain spreads across the nation, it's all hands on deck to help prevent the spread of the disease.

The Center for Disease Control is forecasting this to be one of the worst flu seasons in years.

All Posados Cafe restaurants have started increasing their sanitation measures to ensure no one gets the flu from their restaurants.

"We've always pushed hand washing and sanitation, without a doubt," said Pete Valdez, Posados general manager. Just during this season we've decided to up the game a bit. We've put hand sanitizers in more work stations and also available to more guests. Just encouraging them to wash their hands a bit more."

With the high traffic in restaurants, health experts are encouraging them to try and do everything in their power to fight the flu.

"Restaurants can be a source of food born illness, but during flu season, you can pick up the flu if certain things aren't done to protect you. Our food service people work very hard to break that chain of infection, by keeping their hands clean, trying to clean their menus more often, making sure surfaces are clean and sanitized so they can break that chain," North East Texas Health District representative, Brenda Elrod, said.

Elrod said to be wary of anything that you touch in a restaurant, like menus, plates, table and chairs

"The flu is a virus that is coughed or sneezed onto certain surfaces. You can touch those surfaces and then touch your nose or mouth and spread that virus," Elrod said.

Along with the extra hand sanitizer and menu sanitizing, Posados is encouraging any employee who feels to stay home.
