The Texas economy is doing very well compared to the rest of
the country and, as state lawmakers begin the 20-13 session of the Texas
legislature, the task of creating the budget for the State of Texas for the
next two years begins as well.
The Texas
legislature meets every two years and during the last session, the recession
was in full gear and state revenues were down, leading to a drastic cut in
state services impacting education, roads, state parks among others.
But now, just the opposite situation is at
hand it while many communities and individual Texans expect a return to looser
purse strings that may not be the case.
Special interests groups will be circling to try to gain even more
influence and I fear that some lawmakers will fall prey to their influence.
One reason is that we have the least
experienced state house in four decades so there are a load of freshman
legislators. Several are from right
there in East Texas. And I am certain that they would love to hear from us,
their constituents than they would special interests groups.
We have links to those representing us in
Austin on our website, KLTV.com, under the community tab. And while Governor Perry has his sights set
on lowering taxes, you can still be that there will be a lot of money up for
grabs so reach out to your representative and let them know what is important
to you. It will keep them focused and
make for a Better East Texas.
