Do you think estate sale/ garage sale signs should be allowed to be placed on private property if permission is received from the property owners?
Right now, the City of Tyler does not allow off-premise advertising of estate/ garage sales. However, the City Council is considering a proposed ordinance amendment that would allow up to four off-premise directional signs on private property with permission from the property owners.
Cindy and Kent Nash own Attic Treasures of Tyler, an estate sale service. Kent said he and his wife approached the city with this request because they noticed a decrease in customers when they have sales in cities, like Tyler, that do not allow off-premise advertising.
Victor Fisher, owner of Windsor Estate and Liquidators, said directional signs make a huge difference.
"We would have our sales and all of the sudden we wouldn't have any people coming in and find out that our signs were gone," Fisher said.
Fisher said about fifty percent of his customers show up just because they saw his signs.
"The only off-premise sign that we allow in Tyler is billboards," explained City Planner, Heather Nick.
Nick said the city collected about 4,000 signs that were placed in prohibited areas.
Nick confirmed if the ordinance passes, there will still be regulations as to where the signs can be placed. City planner Heather Nick said signs may not be posted on the light posts, traffic signal posts, sidewalk, fire hydrant, or any other public properties and right-of-ways.
Kent agrees that residents need to protect Tyler's natural beauty and agrees with the city when it comes to these regulations with off-premise advertising.
"You see a lot of garage sale signs that stay up for weeks at a time on telephone poles, stop signs or on the ground you know after it's rained or something like that. Now, our signs, we pay quite a bit of money for and we always take them up each time," Kent explained.
For now, city officials are asking for residents' opinions before council members cast their votes. To let your voice be heard in the city's online public forum, click here.
