A Facebook game has raised thousands of dollars for an East Texas Animal Sanctuary.
The game is called Joy Kingdom. As you play, you accumulate points, which are called "Joy."
"Joy" translates into real dollars that help non-profits who specialize in animal rescue and care.
The makers of Joy Kingdom approached Black Beauty Ranch, wanting to know if there was a project they could feature in their game.
The director of the ranch knew immediately that they wanted to help out their chimpanzees.
"When they asked us, we knew exactly what we wanted to build," said Director of Black Beauty Ranch, Ben Callison. "We wanted to build a tree house for these guys so they can get up in the air and just lay out under the sun and do what they do in nature."
So, how are these projects, like the tree house, funded?
"The game is free to play, but there are players who will spend money in the game on what we would call virtual items. So, we take 20 percent of our revenue or 50 percent of our profits, whichever one comes first, and we allocate that to the real world projects," explained Brooke Peterson, Director of Strategic Development for Sojo Studios.
The chimps could not ask for a better day.
They enjoyed a nice sack lunch on their brand new tree house. It took a while for the curious chimps to learn the best way to get to the top, but once they made it, they spent their time searching for treats hidden by staff.
"It's a way to get them out, get them moving, get them active, enriching their minds because these are incredibly, incredibly intelligent species," Callison said.
The staff said this is the perfect addition all made possible from players worldwide.
"To be able to create this for them is a joy come true for us," Callison said.
