Being slightly overweight may prolong life

Planning on heading to the gym this year to shed a few pounds? You might want to think again.

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, being slightly overweight may help you live longer.

Researchers took data from nearly three million adults worldwide and compared body mass index, which measures weight in relation to height, to the risk of death.

They found that adults who packed a few extra pounds had a six percent lower risk of dying, when compared to people considered "normal" weight.

But don't take this study as a reason to overeat and not exercise - obese people had more than triple the risk of dying, the study said.

Researchers did not look at chronic medical conditions, only death.
