GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

The newest Valley resident made his debut first thing Tuesday morning at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center.

Baby Malcolm Thomas Rhodes was born at 12:04 a.m., and it was a complete surprise to his parents. He came a week early.

"We started to push right before midnight, so we weren't sure if he would come in right at the very end of 2012, but he decided he wanted to wait until 2013," said Malcolm's mom, Kendra Rhodes.

Malcolm was 6 pounds, 13 ounces and 20 inches long. He has a full head of blond hair. His name comes from his dad's, Ash Rhodes, history background.

"King Malcolm III is pretty much the greatest King Scotland's ever had, he was cool in all sorts of ways and that was the inspiration."

Malcolm's middle name is Thomas, which is both Kendra and Ash Rhodes' fathers' names.

"I'm just really super thrilled to have the first child in my family," Ash Rhodes said.

The Rhodes bought a special gift for their bundle of joy: a skull cap with a skull embroidered on it. The Rhodes met and work for the Renaissance Festival as pirates.

"We have kind of a pirate theme to our life so we decided that we'd raise our own little pirate," Kendra Rhodes said. "We were not expecting it. It's a little overwhelming, but it's very cool. It's a cool day to have a birthday, it's cool thing to be able to tell people for the rest of his life that he was the first baby of 2013."
