Heart Safe AED Network Unveiled

The minutes after cardiac arrest are the most important for receiving treatment.

Automatic External Defibrillators are a powerful tool in saving lives after an attack.

Thursday, ETMC EMS unveiled its new Heart Safe AED Network.

It's a partnership with local businesses and churches to have defibrillators at their location and ready to use.

Thursday's unveiling included a demonstration on how to use defibrillators and the presentation of one of the machines to the owner of the Oakhurst/Peachtree Golf Course.

Sergeant Farrell Alexander of the Gladewater Police Department was at the event.

Almost five years ago, his life was saved by a defibrillator.

Without it there's no way I could have lived, said Sergeant Alexander. Even if you do CPR all you're going to do is keep oxygen in the blood to the brain but without anything to shock my heart back into rhythm it's to no avail. There's no way I would have made it without that AED.

Businesses and churches that are a member of the Heart Safe AED Network will have a visible sticker posted to let the community know a defibrillator is kept at their location.
