PHOENIX (CBS5) -
The couple running a home daycare business where a 2-year-old girl died pleaded not guilty on Friday in connection to her death.
Allison Ann Clement, 28, and Ryan Alan Reed, 27, made the plea in Maricopa County Court Friday morning.
The couple had been watching Savannah Cross on a full-time basis since October. Reed admitted to abusing the girl by striking, kicking and roughly grabbing the victim, said Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department.
Clement told investigators she saw the incidents of abuse but did nothing to intervene and did not seek medical aid for the child's injuries, Crump said.
Crump said the child was pronounced dead at a hospital after she was found not breathing on Dec. 11 at the home near Southern Avenue and 45th Street.
Crump said the mother of the deceased child often would leave her for days or weeks at a time at the couple's home. Police say they have extensively interviewed the mother and she is cooperating fully.
Four other children were in the home at the time of the death, including two belonging to the couple running the home business that is advertised on Craigslist, according to Crump. Clement and Reed's children have been turned over to Child Protective Services.
