Community comes together to help tornado victims

Posted: Updated:
STONE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

More than a dozen people showed up with tools in hand Thursday morning at Donald Lee's home in Stone County ready to work. Some were family members, other friends and some had never met Lee before.

"You have got to help people when they are in need so that's what I'm here for give him a hand," Todd Matherne said.

Matherne had plans to go hunting. But after learning about the destruction left behind by the tornado, he canceled the trip.

"That's the community pulling together," Matherne said.

Lee was overwhelmed by the outpouring of help. He said he doesn't know what he would do without it because he can't afford insurance.

"Everybody just wanted to come help. It means a lot to me," Lee said. "A lot of them, I didn't even know. Some of them brothers, one boy his brother lives way off and I have never met him before, but it's coming together."

Down the road a few miles, you'll find the same thing. Church and family members are working hard helping the Cobb family.

"It's a daunting task," Anthony Robertson said. "What we are trying to do right now is trying to inventory everything, get an accurate count, salvage what is salvageable and go from there."

Robertson and his family are vacationing from Houston.

"It doesn't matter if it's Christmas or what day, you do what you have to for family," Robertson said.

And he's extremely thankful for all the others helping his brother-in-law and other victims.

"I learned during Katrina, the people, especially in this area and the South in general, come together in time of need," Robertson said. "It's not like it is expected, but it just always happens."
