Salvation Army hosts Christmas Eve brunch

For many families in East Texas, Christmas Eve is a day full of traditions.

The Salvation Army of Tyler hosted their annual Christmas Eve meal Monday morning, and one East Texas family of first-time volunteers says their morning of service will be the start of a new tradition for them.

Volunteers packed the Salvation Army of Tyler, helping serve Christmas Eve brunch to approximately 500 East Texans in need, like Londale Green, who is part of the Salvation Army's Reconnect program.

"It's a blessing from God to have people to show their companion and love for others and put others before themselves and come out to the Salvation Army and share this great breakfast that we had today," Green said.

That includes the Robertson family of Tyler, who volunteered for the first time today.

"One of the big things that I wanted them to take away from being here today was that everyone is equal," said mom Joy. "There is no one any better than the next person at all. Everyone deserves to be loved."

Twelve year-old Noah says he learned a very important lesson.

"That we don't have it that bad," he said.

And it was an experience the family says they hope to have again soon.

"This is our first time to volunteer but it is not our last time to volunteer. Even if we don't come on a special holiday, Christmas or something of that nature, we'll be back," Joy said. "We'll be back volunteering our time. We'll be back sharing our love. We'll be back spending quality time with the people that really need someone."

The Salvation Army of Tyler will also host Christmas Day lunch Tuesday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
