Proud of East Texas: Marshall's Wonderland of Lights
MARSHALL, TX (KLTV) -
By Joan Hallmark
For the past 26 years, millions of people from throughout the world have enjoyed the beauty of Marshall's "Wonderland of Lights." What began as an editorial in the Marshall News Messenger has turned into one of the most spectacular light shows in the state.
Newspaper publisher George Smith loved Christmas and was in a mellow mood the day he wrote the editorial in November of 1986. Marshall native and philanthropist Wendy Russell Reeves read the editorial and sent $25,000 from her villa in France to buy lights.
The gift started the ball rolling and the citizens of Marshall did the rest.
Today there are more than ten million lights illuminating the Harrison County Courthouse and surrounding area.
