Suspect sought in stolen truck building crash

Posted: Updated:

A stolen truck, a hit and run, and a suspect is still on the loose after crashing the truck into a building in Longview. It happened around 8:00 a.m. as a truck crashed into a building in the 400 block of South Green street, across from the old Foster middle school campus. Police say the crash started with a stolen vehicle last night.

"A vehicle was stolen from East Marshall Avenue; today that vehicle was involved in a hit and run accident," says Longview police officer Debra Stiles.

The driver who was hit in that accident then chased the suspect into the downtown area.

"Followed him until he could no longer see him in the downtown area," Stiles says.

Now with no one chasing him,  the suspect for some reason lost control of the pickup and ran off the road, and by witness accounts, may have been hurt when he fled the scene.

"Somebody saw him limping on scene," says Stiles.

Passers-by seeing the crash called 9-1-1. But as emergency crews arrived, the suspect vanished. Longview attorney Jack Welge, Jr. owns the properties.

"What I found was a debris field running from 415 South Green, through a phone pole guide wire, through a fence," Welge says.

Officers estimate the suspect was going around 70 before the crash.

"Just imagine what it would have been like if Foster middle school would have still been in operation," he says.

Neither home was occupied at the time.

"Its dreadful, but unfortunately it happens. Hopefully we'll catch him," says Welge.

The driver is described as a white male in his mid-to-late 20's, wearing a dark jacket and tan pants with a short haircut. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the driver is asked to call Longview police.
