SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
A Smith County detention officer was sentenced to two years probation by a jury, Thursday.
LaKerry Bowie was found guilty on a civil rights violation of a person in custody charge late Thursday afternoon. The jury then sentenced him to two years probation. The range of sentencing for the state jail felony was 2-10 years in jail or on probation.
In March, Bowie was indicted by a Smith County Grand Jury. Back then, Sheriff J.B. Smith said the relationship was against the law, despite it being apparently consensual.
Bowie had been employed at the county's detention facility for two years. Sheriff Smith said Bowie was fired after he refused to cooperate with the investigation which began in September 2011.
