Trial began Tuesday for ETX jail officer accused of relationship with inmate

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

The trial began Tuesday for a Smith County jail officer accused of having an improper relationship with an inmate.

LaKerry Bowie was indicted on a civil rights violation charge in March.

Sheriff J.B. Smith said that even though the relationship was apparently consensual, it was still against the law.

The sheriff's office says Bowie was fired after he refused to cooperate with the investigation.
