In the wake of the Newtown school tragedy, many Americans are talking about gun control. But part of that conversation is how everything might have been different if school employees had been armed. Congressman Louie Gohmert made a special appearance on Fox News Sunday. He says he wishes the school principal had been armed.
"The conversation that we've got to have has got to have everybody open-minded," Gohmert said.
On Fox News Sunday, he acknowledged many people's desire to just get rid of guns entirely, but Gohmert said he has seen gun laws make the country safer.
"You look at the facts, and the facts are that every time guns have been allowed, concealed carry has been allowed, the crime has gone down," Gohmert said.
He also said that Washington D.C. and Chicago should be some of the safest places in the country because of their strict gun laws, but they're not. Gohmert said he wishes the principal of Sandy Hook Elementary, Dawn Hochsprung, had a weapon on her when the gunman broke into the school.
"Hearing the h eroic stories of the principal lunging, trying to protect...I wish to god that she had had an M-4 in her office locked up so when she heard gunfire, she pulls it out and doesn't have to lunge heroically with nothing but her hands, but she takes him out, takes his head off before he can kill those precious kids," Gohmert said.
In an emotional speech Sunday, President Barack Obama vowed to do everything in his power to ignite change.
President Obama said "No single law, no set of laws, can eliminate evil and prevent acts of violence, but that can't be an excuse for inaction."
Though he never used the word "gun," the President issued a stern, yet unspecific, call to action.
The President also said, "We can't tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end and to end them, we must change."
California Senator Dianne Feinstein says she plans to introduce a bill in the Senate that will ban assault weapons.
Congressman Gohmert says a free people should be an armed people, protecting themselves.
