Children and adults alike enjoyed an afternoon of Texas story-telling, songs and Christmas card making.
Lufkin families spent the afternoon learning about Texas history and enjoying old Texas stories and songs during family day at the Museum of East Texas in Lufkin.
Author of "Singin' Texas", Ab Abernethy, shared his immense knowledge of Texas history and Christmas traditions of the past. He said, "I'm going to do one of the Indian stories about how the world was created according to the Alabama-Coushatta and then show them a few toys, then sign them a few songs and wish them a happy Christmas."
Abernethy read the story "How Critters Created Texas" while children used markers and stamps to create Christmas cards, tags and bookmark for their families.
Abernethy also shared some old Christmas songs. "All the songs that I sing are songs that I collected in East Texas when I was doing the book "Singin' Texas," Abernethy said.
Attendees also got to tour the Festival of Trees, look through all the exhibits at the museum, eat cookies and visit with a special visitor from the North Pole, Santa.
Santa said, "The Museum of East Texas asks me to come by each year to just check on the youngsters here in the Lufkin area and within the region so we stop by because it's a lovely city and we love coming to see all the Christmas trees. and we just want to check in and make sure we're getting all the letters and all the good ideas for presents so when the reindeer and I go back and load up our sleigh we'll be ready for the holiday and prepared to come back to Lufkin."
Santa also wanted to let everyone know how to get on the nice list this year. "We like to see young people that take care of their rooms, do well in school and they just do what their mommy and daddy asks," said Santa.
and Santa says there's one other thing you need to do to get on his good list "Santa likes cookies, Ho Ho Ho, that'll put you on the good list."
Abernethy also brought some old toys that East Texans used to play with back in the day for kids to see how they compare to modern day toys.
