Trinity County authorities called off the manhunt for Leland Randolph, a fugitive who is considered to be armed and dangerous, early Friday morning. However, search dogs are being brought out again because the suspect was allegedly spotted near Apple Springs Friday.
Randolph, who is still at large, was last seen at about 11 a.m. A resident in the Apple Springs area spotted him running into a heavily wooded area. Before the initial manhunt began Thursday morning, he was seen carrying a handgun on Beef Road near Groveton. Trinity County Sheriff Ralph Montemayor said authorities believe Randolph could be in either Trinity County or Angelina County because he has family in both.
Montemayor said authorities are looking into various leads and tips. He urged anyone with information that might lead to Randolph's arrest to contact the TCSO at (936) 642-1424 or the Lufkin Crime Stoppers hot line at (936) 639-TIPS (8477).
Viewers in the Centralia and Apple Springs area reported that several law enforcement agencies assisted in the manhunt. In addition, a helicopter was brought in to assist with the search.
According to the Texas Rangers, Randolph is wanted for numerous felony warrants, including burglary of a habitation in Jasper and Hardin counties, revocation of probation in Angelina County, and possession of a controlled substance and evading arrest in Trinity County.
The suspect is described as a white male, 6'2", wearing a black tank top, jeans and tennis shoes. He also has a shaved head.
Authorities in Trinity County have been searching for Randolph since 10 a.m. Thursday after they tried to arrest him on outstanding warrants.
The Trinity County Sheriff's Office, Constables Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers and Texas Game Wardens are all involved in the search.
