'Made in America': Janie’s Cakes

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

The average shopper usually spends about $750 on holiday gifts. If everyone spent around $65 of that on American made gifts, we could potentially create hundreds of thousands of jobs.

Tyler business owner Janie Clapp is about to celebrate 25 years of baking her now-famous pound cakes.

"I made them over the holidays and so many of my customers liked them, I thought you know I can make these and ship them all over the country. so that was kind of the go," says Janie Clapp, founder of Janie's Cakes.

Janie's Cakes aren't just made in America from start to finish, they're made entirely from scratch.

"All of my products come from in the United States, a lot of them here in Texas. Our pecans are local organic pecans, my chickens lay the eggs for the cakes," says Clapp.

A quality product many East Texans say makes a perfect gift.

"I've known Janie since she was a little girl. My husband and I send them all over the country as business gifts and I just use them here because, it's not just that I know her, it's that they're divine," says Jan Clayton, a Janie's Cakes customer.

Janie says she not only uses the best ingredients she can find for her cakes, but she also bakes in something special.

"When I'm baking, I feel like I'm baking my love into the cakes," says Clapp.

Janie's daughter works with her at their store and says she enjoys supporting and selling American-made products.

"When a customer comes in, whether they're in Tyler or they're calling from another state, it is great to know that they are choosing to order something that is made in America, made in Texas even at that," says Katherine Crow, Janie's daughter.

The two are self proclaimed "pound cake perfectionists."

"I want everybody to enjoy them as much as I enjoy making them and eating them, I eat a lot of cake," says Clapp.
