The Tyler Independent School District Board of Trustees confirmed they unanimously named Mr. Gary Mooring, current Tyler ISD Interim Superintendent, as the lone finalist for the District's superintendent position.
The decision was made at a special board meeting on Wednesday.
When Mooring settled into the interim superintendent position back in August, he said he had no intention of making it permanent, but now that has changed.
In 2006, Mooring joined Tyler ISD as deputy superintendent and later served as interim superintendent.
"After being out of the district for a few years working at Tyler Junior College, I got back into the position and really was excited about the challenges," Mooring said.
Those challenges include helping the district meet Federal Adequate Yearly Progress standards, something the district has struggled with in the past.
"There's not one person in this district or probably in any district that's not looking to improve and we're also looking at best practices throughout the state. What has helped other districts be successful? There has been progress in what we've done," Mooring said.
Standardized testing has been the center of controversy since the development of the new STAAR exam, something Mooring is leery of.
"I welcome any accountability that we can do, but I think there is a reasonable way we can do that. I think the way we use the STAAR test and the accountability system is what the challenge is going to be. I'd like to see the state do a better job at that," he said.
Another challenge is providing stability within the district. John Tyler High School for example, has gone through multiple principals in the past few years.
"We're looking at building longevity with all our campuses and getting the right person and that's a key in the leadership roles in those campuses," Mooring said.
If awarded the superintendent position, Mooring said he will face these challenges head-on.
By law, the district must wait 21 days before finalizing their decision.
