Lufkin Police arrested a man who they say stole about $14 worth of merchandise from a grocery store before injuring a police officer and getting caught with drug paraphernalia Thursday night.
According to the report, officers responded to HEB, located in the 100 block of North Timberland Drive at 9:11 p.m., after an employee reported a man left the store without paying for some items.
The suspect, later identified as Gerry Glenn James, 50, fled from the store but the employee described him as a black man wearing a long black trench coat and a top hat.
Officers located James on Clark Street, but he refused to comply with officers' attempts to stop him and then he resisted attempts to restrain him, even injuring the leg of one officer, according to the report.
Once in custody, officers found peanut butter cookies (valued at $3.99), pecan pieces ($5.97), peanuts ($3.47) and hot dog wieners (88 cents) inside his coat, according to the report.
Officers also found three drug pipes and a marijuana cigarette, according to the report.
James is charged with evading arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and theft, which is enhanced to a state jail felony due to prior convictions.
