LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Everyday heroes took a break from public service and walked through the aisles of the Kohl's near Preston Highway on Saturday as police, firefighters, nurses, EMS workers and many more spent the day with underprivileged children.

More than 150 volunteers participated in a holiday tradition known as Shop with a Hero.

Valley View Baptist Church worked throughout the year to raise money for families so their children will have a few presents on Christmas.

"This is part of our mission's effort to minister to our communities," Pastor Joel Carwile said.

Organizers allocated $75 gift cards to each 'hero' and helped the children select clothes and a few toys.

Parents like Ada Riley said they're grateful for the experience. "They're able to purchase things that I'm not able to get," Riley said. "This gives them the opportunity to kind of pick out what they want that I'm not able to help them with. It's a beautiful thing. I thank God."

It's not just the families who benefit from the generosity and experience.

"It's so rewarding," said Louisville Metro Police officer Mike Ball said. "It's a chance for police to interact with these boys and girls and show them we're approachable. Officers can come out and teach kids not to be scared of police."

Shop with a Hero is in its fifth year.
