East Texas school receives $14K in grants

Posted: Updated:

One East Texas school surprised teachers on Thursday with more than $14 thousand in grants.

Van ISD administration visited the high school, elementary and Jr. High Thursday afternoon passing out oversized checks for the teachers who had applied for grants this past year.

ISD officials say the money will go to a myriad of different things for departments, including Ipads and leap pads for elementary students, and a lighting kid for the theater department.

The Van Vandal band stood outside of each winning class to entertain them with carols.

Larry Wisdom, theater teacher at Van, said in this day and age of education cut backs, the grants help fill the gap.

"The grant fills the gap. The work of this community and the people of this community who so strongly believe in education, they work tirelessly to keep this grant money alive. So that every year these grants have been awarded to teachers. It's kind of a God send to teachers that have needs, which in the end benefit students," Wisdom said.

15 teachers total at Van were awarded with grants.
