In The Kitchen: Grandma Berns' Coffee Cake


1 1/4 c. Sugar
2 c. Flour
1/2 tsp. Salt
1/2 tsp. Nutmeg
1/2 tsp. Cinnamon
1/2 c. Shortening
1 egg (beaten)
1 c. Buttermilk
1 tsp. Baking soda

1.Mix sugar, flour, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon, and shortening with dough blender.
2.Reserve about 1/4 cup for topping.
3.Mix egg, milk and baking soda together and stir in the first mixture.
4. Grease 10" pan. Pour in batter and put topping on top of batter.
5.Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Hint: Add a little extra buttermilk to mixture before pouring into pan.
Do not overcook! (For cupcakes, bake about 26 minutes)
