Miles plans to be LSU head coach "for as long as I can be"

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

With reports of Arkansas offering Les Miles a five year, $27.5 million contract, LSU made sure its head coach is not going anywhere, announcing Wednesday Miles would get a raise and contract extension.

"The Arkansas issue was a sincere one. A colleague of mine over the years is the athletic director over there. I have great respect for how he conducts business. Our conversations were very preliminary, and fell short of any major interest. I recommended other candidates. I did not speak to Jerry Jones. The view of five years and $27 million is not true. I very much respect those Razorbacks and how they played in that last game. But I am an LSU Head Coach, and will be an LSU Head Coach for as long as I can be. We've done some special things here. It's nice that the administration, Joe Alleva, and Chancellor Jenkins recognize that. Seven years is a long tenure. I'm fortunate to have that commitment from a great institution and a great school in LSU."

"Les Miles is one of the premier coaches in the country and has LSU in contention for championships year in and year out," Alleva said.  "Only two coaches in the 119-year history of LSU football have coached as many years at this school and only one has won more games.  Les Miles has made a commitment to LSU and LSU is solidifying its commitment to Les Miles."

"The coaching business is a competitive one and it is important to compensate our coach for his accomplishments and his worth," Alleva said.  "Les has not received a pay increase since his salary was automatically elevated following our national championship in 2007 and he has continued to keep LSU on the national stage."

"Our intent was to address his contract following this year's bowl game, but speculation about other job opportunities accelerated our process a little," Alleva said.  "I think we have accomplished the important step of securing Les Miles as our head coach for the long-term good of the program."

Tuesday night sources close to the LSU Athletic Department told WAFB that Athletic Director Joe Alleva had a decision to make, if he wanted to keep Les Miles as the school's football coach.

Those sources said the relationship between Miles and Alleva, who did not hire Miles to replace Nick Saban eight years ago, might not be strong enough to keep Miles from going to Arkansas, where Jeff Long, who worked with Miles at Michigan, is now Athletic Director.

In his eight years with LSU, Miles has an 85-20 record, one National Championship and two SEC Titles. The Tigers finished this season 10-2, losing only to #4 Florida and #2 Alabama by a combined total of 12 points.

"This Miles family is awfully comfortable in southern Louisiana. I have teenage sons that love going off to school. I have a nine-year-old daughter that is as happy as she can be. I have a 19-year-old daughter with one college team, and a bunch of other teams. I think home is what we call this place."

LSU awaits a bowl bid, with the Cotton and Chick-Fil-A Bowls looking to be the likely destinations.

"We are looking forward to playing in a quality bowl game. I think our football team will be better. I think we'll return at least two starters to the play. I think another of other guys will step forward and be healthier. I think our fans will look forward to playing. I think we will fill a bowl arena. We look forward to that. There speculation on which bowl. I know LSU will be there in attendance, and that will be enough."

LSU also has another top ten recruiting class this year.
