The Smith County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested and charged a man with abusing a 2-year-old child in East Texas.
Investigators say they were called to a home at 11167 FM 848 around 9:30 p.m. Nov. 20 and found the child was living with her biological mother and the mother's fiance, Joshua Robert Williams.
The mother told deputies she left the house for about an hour to run an errand. When she got home, the mother told deputies the child was unconscious and in respiratory arrest. The mother said that's when she called 911, and EMS took the child to the hospital.
Authorities said doctors at the hospital discovered the child had been abused physically.
Sgt. Ron Rathbun, an investigator in this case, says he is confident Williams is responsible.
"We gathered enough facts, information and evidence on Mr. Williams that we put it on a warrant, the judge signed it, and he's in jail right now," said Rathbun.
After their investigation, the Smith County Sheriff's Office charged Williams with felony injury to a child. He was booked into the Smith County Jail where his bond is set at $250,000.
The child has been taken to a Dallas hospital, and doctors say she has made some improvements. They are going to keep the child in the hospital for the next few days to see if she can eat and function on her own. When she is released from the hospital, the child will be in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Rathbun said Williams could face more charges as this investigation continues.
"You can tell she does not feel very well, and all we can do is sing to her and tell her, 'It's okay, and you're safe and everything will be alright,'" said Rathbun.
