Lufkin firefighters are investigating two more attempted arsons in the North Lufkin area, the third straight day of suspected cases.
According to Lufkin Police spokesman Det. JB Smith, both fires occurred around 6:30 a.m. Thursday.
The back door of Owen's Club at 815 Keltys St. was set on fire but nothing else burned, Smith said. A board was set on fire in the carport area of a vacant home at 714 Cottonbelt St., but a Lufkin Police officer saw the smoke and moved the board away from the home.
Authorities suspect arson in four additional cases from the previous two mornings.
According to LFD spokesman Steve McCool, the first fire early Tuesday was around 4:50 a.m. and obviously intentional. He said a homeowner in the 900 block of O'Quinn Avenue woke up after he heard something hit his house. He went outside and saw a stick on fire against his house. He put the fire out and called police. It also appears the gas tank of some vehicles in the area were tampered with, McCool said.
The next fire was called in around 5:21 a.m. at a vacant, boarded-up house in the 1400 block of Keltys Street. McCool said it started on the back of the house, and the fire gutted it. It took firefighters about 45 minutes to put it out.
While firefighters were working that fire, they learned of a third fire in the 1000 block of Hosea Dolphus Avenue. McCool said a pickup truck in behind a residence had some lumber and trash in it, and someone set it ablaze. Firefighters were able to put it out quickly.
Three more structures burned near the intersection of Wilson Avenue and Keltys Street Wednesday morning.
Anyone with information concerning these fires or the identity of the person responsible for setting the fires can provide information anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers of Lufkin at (936) 639-TIPS or by submitting an anonymous tip at www.LufkinCrimeStoppers.com.
"This is an old neighborhood and it has a lot of elderly people that stays around and for people to go around and setting fires and stuff, that's just not appropriate," one neighbor said.
"I talked to a guy this morning, and he said he's afraid himself but he don't even live in this area and he afraid himself," a second neighbor said.
"I fear they're eventually going to hit a house that somebody's in and they're not going to able and get out," a third neighbor said.
"I pray and hope they catch whomever it is, and whomever it is, if they're out there listening, you need to turn yourself in and stop setting these fires, cause you could cause somebody their life," a fourth neighbor said.
Anyone with any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 936-639-TIPS. Also, if anyone in Lufkin is in need a home smoke detector, you can contact the Lufkin Fire Department to receive one free of charge.
