East Texas athletes celebrate signing day

Tiarra Davis has been to Austin before.  The Henderson senior was a dominant force on the mound, leading the Lady Lions to the 3A state championship game in 2012.  Davis felt right at home.  Now she'll get to spend another four years playing in Austin as member of the Texas softball team.  Davis signed with Longhorns on Wednesday.

"I've always wanted to go to Texas," said Davis.  "Ever since I first started playing softball when I was six years old, I knew I wanted to go to Texas. It's a dream come true."

Before leaving for Austin, Davis hopes to lead Henderson to the state title game one more time.

In Hallsville, senior Ronnie Gideon has signed with Texas A&M baseball.  Gideon chose the Aggies over, Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Florida.

Tyler East Gymnastics star Emily Rickman wanted to go to Texas A&M, but they don't have gymnastics.  Rickman still gets to be an Aggie, but she'll be a Utah State Aggie. Gymnastic scholarships don't come easy.

"Every little girl dreams of going to the Olympics," said Rickman.  "That's the goal. But in reality only five gymnast make it every four years. A college scholarship isn't as hard as making the Olympics, it's difficult. There's only 70 schools that do gymnastics with three scholarships a year. There's over 400 level tens over the nation. I feel very honored to get this scholarship."

Bishop Gorman senior Michelle Obach has proven to be one of the best basketball players in East Texas.  Averaging over 20 points per game, Obach turned down division one offers to play at division two Merrimack University in Massachusetts.

"I guess I had to realize there's a shelf life for female athletes," said Obach.  "I'm not going pro and there's no big pro league coming for me. This is my last four years of playing basketball. I've played my whole life but I have to think about the future and that where ever I go has to prepare me to get a job and become a part of the regular world. I feel like Merrimack is really going to prepare me for that."

Obach wants to study sports medicine.
