The Board of Regents are set to address a few items relating to the two institutions in East Texas -- UTHSCT and UT-Tyler.
NEW NAME FOR UTHSCT
The board's health affairs committee is set to vote on a name change and new look for UTHSCT.
The board is set to decide Thursday afternoon to approve The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler to do business as UTHealth-Northeast. Passing this item means most of the visual presence for the health center will change to UTHealth-Northeast but the full name of the center itself will remain The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler.
Health center officials propose the new identity will promote a greater recognition and reflect the center's multiple locations in towns and communities.
CLINIC PROPOSED IN TYLER
The board will also look at allowing UTHSCT to lease a 25,000 square foot space in Tyler.
A proposal says the facility on 2235 West Gentry Parkway would be leased for ten years and used as a multiuse clinic. The proposal says the property would require improvements to make the space suitable for a clinic.
UTHSCT would be slated to pay for the improvements that are estimated to be approximately $3.1 million.
UT-TYLER HOUSTON ENGINEERING CENTER
UT System Regents are also set to authorize UT-Tyler to lease space from Houston Community College Campus in Alief.
The university is working with HCC-Alief to use space for UT-Tyler's Houston Engineering Center. According to the proposal UT-Tyler and HCC would form ways for students to transition into the programs that UT-Tyler offers.
The UT System's Employee Advisory Council will also recommend that the System take a tobacco-free environment stance on every campus.
The system's flagship campus, The University of Texas at Austin, started a tobacco-free campus in April. The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler has been tobacco-free since July 2004.
A tobacco-free initiative systemwide would affect the UT System's nine academic institutions (including UT-Tyler) and six health institutions (including UTHSCT).
